___Pierce County Community
Connections Developmental Disabilities staff, parent volunteer, Paula
McCullough, and Sergeant Trent Stephens with the Pierce County Sheriff
Department spent several years investigating the possible resources to locate a
lost loved one. Driven by her personal mission and the safety of her loved one,
Paula has been a tireless advocate for all Pierce County and Washington State
families. Her passion, dedication and
commitment drew Pierce County Community Connections Developmental Disabilities
staff and Sergeant Trent Stephens to EmFinders’ EmSeeQ device.
While some Washington counties are using other systems, many do not support a
specific program that offers a location device. While carefully considering the available options for Pierce County, the
EmSeeQ device stood out.It provides the
most advanced technology available, has proven to be highly effective, is
reasonably priced and has been given glowing testimonies by those who have put
it to the test. With PAVE's Locate and
the statewide awareness of this device by Search and Rescue and our 9-1-1 call
centers, the EmSeeQ device is a practical solution for families from any
county.
__“Each year we are called upon to search for dozens of people. Some of them cannot aid in their own rescue. This technology will enable us to be more effective and to save lives.”
- Pierce County Sheriff, Paul A. Pastor
__Though _having
an EmSeeQ device does not guarantee a
safe recovery of a lost loved one. As a parent organization, PAVE's mission is
to provide support, advocacy, training and informational resources to empower
families and individuals with disabilities. Partnering with Pierce County Community
Connections, the Pierce County Sheriff Department and EmFinders is one way for
PAVE to offer a viable resource to all families in Washington State with a
loved one who may wander or be prone to elopement. Most of all PAVE wants to assist families
facing these concerns and reduce the isolation they may be experiencing. PAVE's
sincere hope is that families are able to participate in activities by
increasing their loved one’s safety.
For loved ones who elope, this device can offer endless possibilities for
enjoyment.According to a recent study done by the Interactive
Autism Network in April 2011, the main cause of elopement in children with
Autism Spectrum Disorders is a desire to go
somewhere, not to run from
something. Be it a favorite spot in their local neighborhood or elsewhere, the
intent to get somewhere is a driving force for them. When you are unable to
write or tell others your name, where you live and/or how to get home, this drive
to go is a parent’s nightmare.
PAVE's Locate (originally named Project LOCATE) is a resource for families to consider, providing a tool that can
offer some peace of mind and allow loved ones to participate in activities
throughout our beautiful state.
